Under Ohio law, many traffic citations can be resolved through the Traffic Violations Bureau, allowing you to waive your court appearance.
How to Pay: If your citation qualifies, you may pay online, by phone, by mail, or in person.
Deadline: Payments must be received by the Clerk’s office before your scheduled court date and time. You can find this time on the bottom of your citation or by using our online record search.
Payment Requirement: You must pay the balance in full; partial payments cannot be accepted.
Missed Dates: Court records update every 24 hours. If you missed your date, check your status online after this window to see if you still qualify for payment.
Warrants & Penalties: If you no longer qualify for online payment, you must appear in person at the Clerk's office. At this stage, a warrant may have been issued, or a license block/forfeiture may have been filed with the BMV, resulting in additional fees.
Multiple Charges: A single ticket can contain up to seven separate charges. To waive your appearance, ensure you pay for all charges. Look for letters after your case number (e.g., TRD...A, B, C) to identify multiple cases on one ticket.
The State of Ohio requires proof of insurance for all drivers.
If you provided proof at the time of your offense, no further action is needed.
If you did NOT provide proof, the Court must notify the BMV, who will mail you a formal request.
Important: Failure to respond to the BMV will result in a license suspension. Do not send your proof of insurance to the Court after making a payment.
If your citation includes any of the following, you cannot pay online and must appear in court:
Serious Driving Offenses: Any felony or indictable offense, eluding or fleeing a police officer, and drag racing.
OVI / Physical Control: Operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or permitting another to do so, and physical control charges.
License & Registration Issues: Driving under suspension or without a license (except for licenses expired less than six months), and illegal license plates.
Accidents & Reckless Behavior: Leaving the scene of an accident and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.
High-Speed & Safety Violations: Any speed clocked at 100 MPH or more, passing a school bus, and certain railroad crossing violations.
Repeat Offenses: A third moving violation within a 12-month period (excluding speed violations).
Commercial/Vehicle Weight: Overload violations.
By submitting an online payment, you acknowledge the following legal conditions:
Guilty Plea: You are pleading "Guilty" to all charges as listed on the citation.
Waiver of Rights: You are waiving your right to a trial or a physical court appearance.
BMV Notification: The Court will close your case and forward the conviction to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles; any applicable points will be added to your driving record.
Liability: Neither the Sylvania Municipal Court nor the City of Sylvania assumes liability for data submitted via this secure, encrypted site.
Many traffic citations can be resolved by paying a "waiver" instead of appearing in court. You can pay online, by mail, or by phone—provided the Clerk’s office receives the full amount before your scheduled court date and time. Partial payments are not accepted.
Citations involving the following cannot be paid online and require you to appear in court:
Operating a vehicle under the influence (OVI/DUI).
Driving under suspension or without a valid license.
Leaving the scene of an accident or fleeing a police officer.
Speeds clocked at 100 MPH or more or passing a school bus.
A third moving violation within a 12-month period.
Court records update every 24 hours. If you missed your date, check your case status online immediately. You may still be eligible to pay; however, if you do not qualify, a warrant may have been issued for your arrest, and you must appear in person at the Clerk's office to resolve additional fees or license blocks.
No. If you provided proof at the time of the offense, you are compliant. If you did not, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) will contact you via mail. Do not send proof of insurance to the court after making your payment.
By submitting payment, you are entering a plea of "Guilty" to all charges on the citation. This waives your right to a trial or court appearance. Once processed, the case is closed, and the results (including any applicable points) are forwarded to the BMV.
